"There’s always space for one more taco…"

Dear Readers,

Last night, after a long, long day visiting Stonehenge and the beautiful town of Bath, Lauryn, Natalie, and I hopped on over to the area near Embankment Station in search of something to eat. I’ve been missing Mexican food recently, so when we saw a restaurant called Lupita, which styles itself as Mexico City Cuisine. I was very excited. We were lucky to be seated because this place usually requires a reservation on a Saturday night, so I assume it’s pretty popular.

Lupita is also ridiculously pricey (just like every other restaurant at dinnertime in London – Don’t eat out at night here if you don’t want to go home with your wallet at least $25-$40 lighter, maybe more depending on appetizers/drinks you order… That’s right, for one person), especially considering the less-than-stellar meal. I was hoping for something a little better… Let me assure you, a mariachi band soundtrack and some Mexican paper streamer decorations do not mean that you serve awesome Mexican cuisine. It was passable (passable for being in England…), but I left missing my Mom’s cooking more than ever. The only redeemable part of the evening was the margaritas, which cost maybe too pretty a penny.

So festive.

What a handy-dandy mirror wall!
I think one of the most amusing parts of the experience was reading the paper placemats on each table that had detailed instructions on How to enjoy Mexican food. Allow me to show you just how detailed:

Yes, these were genuine instructions.
Evidently they really are necessary since the British couple sitting next to us still tried using their cutlery to eat their tacos (they were very entertaining, I’ll give them that). When I ordered enchiladas verdes, I was warned that this dish was very spicy. If you know me well, then you know I live and die for spicy food. For me, this dish isn’t what I typically think of as very spicy. I assured the waiter I would be fine. My plate arrived absolutely soaked in sour cream (it looked like sour cream soup) with little to no cheese, and I had to dig around a little to find the tomatillo sauce…

I have decided that I need to either A) go in search of another Mexican restaurant, or B) simply search high and low for suitable ingredients to make my own Mexican cuisine.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

If you’re back in Texas right now, go have something yummy to eat
at your favorite Mexican restaurant for me!

Enjoy the rest of your Sunday!

– Les
